Nariño, Colombia's La Victoria community occupies a uniquely privileged geographical position within Tablón de Gómez, a municipality settled by farmers from various regions who discovered soils ideal for peas, corn, beans, and especially avocado. For years, avocado served as the primary axis of the local economy, but the community’s financial and ecological landscape shifted significantly when families—including the Garcia family—transitioned to coffee cultivation and began utilizing fertilizers.
This change moved the region beyond its previous reliance on peanuts and corn, leading to a marked improvement in local prosperity. The Garcia family and their neighbors are hyperaware of the challenges posed by climate change and have committed to preserving the ecosystem that sustains them. They maintain portions of their land as untouched forest and strictly protect the native vegetation surrounding the waterways where their local water originates. Their farming model is one of deep integration; coffee is intercropped with fruit trees like avocado and lemon, which provide essential shade. This ecosystem is further supported by free-range animals, including chickens, pigs, and guinea pigs, whose manure serves as natural fertilizer for the land. The production of this lot involves the Castilla and Colombia varieties, supplemented by banana crops.
Following a careful and selective harvest, the coffee is processed in cement tanks where it undergoes fermentation for 15 to 17 hours. The drying process is completed on patios or raised beds over a period of 8 to 12 days, ensuring the coffee reaches a stable and high-quality state. Beyond agriculture, La Victoria is defined by a culture of peace and mutual respect. Every August, the community gathers to celebrate their patron saint, San Ezequiel. During this holiday, each household organizes a troupe at their doorstep to join a general celebration marked by the sharing of traditional fried guinea pig and local liquor. Our import partners at Red Fox Coffee Merchants have maintained a presence in this remote region since 2015, a time when the community suffered from a lack of strong market access. While producers now have more options for selling their harvest, they continue to pay premium rates to ensure these long-standing relationships remain mutually rewarding and sustainable for the families of La Victoria.
