Marcelino Saya is a smallholder producer in Ccorimaya, a small community in the Yanatile district of Santa Teresa in Cusco, Southern Peru. This community has 30 coffee-producing families, all of whom speak Quechua, the traditional language of this region. The community’s name, Ccorimayo, Quechua for “river of gold,” is nearly a 9 hour drive from the city of Cusco. Marcelino himself is 68 years old and has been producing coffee all his life. His wife and children help him maintain the farm, including maintenance work like pruning and pest control. He produces Bourbon, Caturra and Typica on his 6-hectare farm. Each variety is carefully separated so that he can harvest them separately. He uses native trees including Pacay and cedar for shade, farming them in synergy with the coffee. Marcelino is always working to improve his craft and learn more each year.
